As the World Transitions From a Manufacturing to a Knowledge Economy, Here Is A Fascinating Status & Prospect Report Re: an African Information Economy
A basic premise of my thinking is that there is a global transition occurring from a manufacturing to a knowledge economy. In the midst of that transition, we are now experiencing a global economic crisis that (I believe) is also a cultural, societal and political in nature. We (I) tend to be concerned about the down side, which makes sense because the consequences of a worst case scenario can be so significant. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an upside – in fact, as I’ve said before, I think President Obama should paint the picture of the upside. I think that by so doing he can mobilize his vision more forcefully. Part of the vision he paints would be a truly interconnected world and an elevation of the quality of life for millions.
Consider, for example, what is happening in Africa. If you have the time, take a look at the videos I’ve posted below (the quality improves substantially after the first minute or so). This is from a briefing called The Framework for an African Information Economy, hosted on February 11 by Qorvis. The discussion outlines how an initiative analogous to the Clinton era “Framework for Global Ecommerce” can bring Africa into the global economy.
The speakers include Daniel Berninger, CEO, FWD – Africa: The Last Infotech Frontier; Witney Schneidman, Advisor to President Obama on Africa and Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs under President Clinton; Vijay Mahajan, Author, “Africa Rising” and “The 86% Solution” – Trade not, aid as path to diminish poverty in Africa; James Moore, Chairman, Geopartners Foundation – Open Economies
