If Obama’s Constituency Falls Apart, Even His Political Foes Are Going To Regret It

February 18th, 2009

I was bothered this morning by a comment by Kip Herriage whose well-reasoned article “Do Not Trust This Market” was posted on Seeking Alpha.  He supported a viewpoint articulated by economic analyst Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in an article in the London Telegraph a few days ago. The gist of the article, worth reading in its entirety, is summarized in the lead sentence: Read more…

The Economy Is Tied To How Well (If At All) President Obama Can Hold Together His Coalition Of The Middle

February 17th, 2009

A couple of years ago, I started getting shocked by a trend I was seeing in some private research.  When the company where I work (Qorvis Communications – I co-founded), sets out to develop a communications campaign for a client, one of our first steps is to conduct research to understand the thinking of the audience we need to reach. As the World Transitions From a Manufacturing to a Knowledge Economy, Here Is A Fascinating Status & Prospect Report Re: an African Information Economy

February 13th, 2009

A basic premise of my thinking is that there is a global transition occurring from a manufacturing to a knowledge economy.  In the midst of that transition, we are now experiencing a global economic crisis that (I believe) is also a cultural, societal and political in nature.  We (I) tend to be concerned about the down side, which makes sense because the consequences of a worst case scenario can be so significant.  But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an upside Read more…

Thinking Beyond The Obama Stimulus Program

February 10th, 2009

I have a great respect for President Obama and his team and his ability to tap into the tone of the country, which he will certainly leverage during his presidency.  I also appreciate the goals of his stimulus package.  It would probably have a benefit that the country needs, especially more mid- and long-term results such as a better infrastructure that is sorely needed.  But I do think there are alternative ideas that would stimulate the economy much sooner and provide much more of a “jolt” than the President’s plan would provide. Where’s The Vision?

February 9th, 2009

My article about the similarities of today and the period leading up to the French Revolution has stirred some really interesting discussions.  One thing I’ve learned is that people are much more comfortable in private versus public conversations, and that is probably a good thing.  I’ve also learned that all sorts of people across industries, ages, and economic classes share a serious concern about what’s happening, and that the most optimistic among them hold to the belief:  Read more…

Thinking About The Economic Crisis; Recalling Hegel; Realizing The Irony Of Marx

February 6th, 2009

I remember reading the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel while in college.  I’m very certain that what I remember about him was more attributable to the extraordinary lectures of my professor, Thelma Z. Lavine, who at the time (1965-67) held an endowed chair at George Washington University and who subsequently was a Robinson Professor at George Mason University.

What If It’s Wrong To Compare Today To The Depression? What If It’s Right To Compare Today To The Conditions Preceding The French Revolution?

February 5th, 2009

In the legitimate pursuit of trying to understand the current economic situation in the context of history, the question most often asked is:  How does this compare to the Depression?  That could be the wrong question.  It might be more appropriate to ask:  How does this compare to the environment that led to the French Revolution?
